Spalding (1845-1881), concerning his naval service, including his position as clerk (1861-1862) to his uncle, Enoch Greenleafe Parrott, taking part in the siege of Beaufort, S.C., and the blockade of Charleston, S.C., life at the U.S. Naval Academy (1862-1866), and descriptions of China, Japan, and the Dutch East Indies while serving in the Asiatic Squadron (1872-1875).
